Punch Brothers shared a cover of Jimmie Rodgers’ “Any Old Time.” The song is set to appear on the string quintet’s upcoming Tony Rice tribute album, Hell on Church Street, due out on January 14, 2022 via Nonesuch Records.

Although originally a song by Jimmie Rodgers, known as the Father of Country Music, late great bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice included “Any Old Time” on his landmark 1983 album Church Street Blues. Hell on Church Street sees Punch Brothers — guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjoist Noam Pikelny, mandolinist/singer Chris Thile and fiddler Gabe Witcher — paying homage to Rice and Church Street Blues by reinterpreting the entire album, which features Rice on songs by Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Bill Monroe and more.

As Rice is a massive influence on Punch Brothers and countless other musicians in the bluegrass sphere and beyond, the band originally intended Hell on Church Street as a gift to Tony, who sadly died on December 25, 2020 just a month after the quintet recorded the album.

“No record (or musician) has had a greater impact on us, and we felt compelled to cover it in its entirety, with the objective of interacting with it in the same spirit of respect-fueled adventure that Tony brought to each of its pre-existing songs,” the band said in a statement.
