Pro-Shot Video: Widespread Panic Kicks Off Three Night Stand At Red Rocks

Last night Widespread Panic returned to the road to kick off a three-night stand at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. The historic venue has become the jam stalwarts home away from home since they first played it back in September of 1991 as part of a bill that also featured Blues Traveler and Acoustic Junction, with last night’s gig bringing their total number of appearances to 56.

Widespread Panic got things started with the old-school classic “Postcard,” a tune that been in their repertoire since 1986. From there, the band worked their way through a cover of Allan Price’s “Sell Sell,” “Weight Of The World” and “Better Off.” WSP then seamlessly strung together the trio of “Tortured Artist,” which was played for the first time since June of 2014, “Cease Fire” and “I Not Alone.” The band closed out the first set with fan-favorites “Holden Oversoul” > “Big Wooly Mammoth” and “Chilly Water.”

Panic got set two going with the Vic Chesnutt-penned tune “Let’s Get Down To Business,” from the pair’s collaborative band Brute. From there the six-piece Southern jam act offered up a cover of Murray McLauchlan’s “Honky Red.” Next up, the band dove back into more familiar territory with the JoJo Hermann sung tune “Imitation Leather Shoes” and the pairing of “Machine” > “Barstools & Dreamers.” Lead singer John Bell strapped on the mandolin for a take on “Ain’t Life Grand,” with “Makes Sense To Me” and “One Kind Favor” following. The band closed out the set with an impressive segued-filled run of “Fishwater” > “Drums” > “Pigeons” > “Fishwater” > “Blackout Blues.” JB & Co. concluded the evening with the three-song encore of “Old Joe,” JJ Cale’s “Travelin’ Light” and “Henry Parsons Died.”
