The inaugural Bonnaroo took place on the farm in Manchester, Tennessee June 21 – 23, 2002 featuring nearly every major jam act of the time. Bonnaroo ’02 did include performances from a few bands outside the jam designation including Ween, Jurassic 5 and Blackalicious. For today’s Throwback Thursday let’s look back at Ween’s performance from the first-ever Bonnaroo.

Ween took the stage on Sunday afternoon, June 23 at Bonnaroo ’02. The band focused on material from an eight-year-old album, 1994’s Chocolate & Cheese, as they threw in a whopping eight songs from the LP. One of those tunes was “Roses Are Free,” which Ween started performing regularly shortly after Phish debuted their cover of “Roses Are Free” in 1997 (Read Dean Ween’s take on the song). Watch pro-shot footage of “Roses Are Free” from Ween’s 2002 set at Bonnaroo:

In 2004 Ween returned to Bonnaroo and played the festival two additional times with the last occurring in 2010. Ween broke up in 2012. Co-founders Dean and Gene Ween have not performed together since.
