On Tuesday night Phish used “Steep” as a springboard to improvisational glory in a way they had never done in the past. Today, the band have released video of the impressive “Swept Away”/”Steep” pairing from Night Nine of their Baker’s Dozen residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
While the quartet played the Billy Breathes ballad “Swept Away” straight, it was out of “Steep” in which things became interesting. Aaron “Neddy” Stein described the “Steep” as such:
With the purple/green light scheme reappearing, the band followed Gordon’s room-reverberating bassplosions into a deep Page-synth groove and an unfolding cosmic space. Bliss met evil for the extended jam which had the Garden buzzing with question-marks paired with exclamation-points.
