Last August, a concert in honor of late Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia’s 75th birthday was held at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. An all-star band dubbed the “Jerry Garcia Birthday Band” was put together to perform a set at Red Rocks as part of the tribute on August 4, 2017. Professionally-shot video featuring a song from the Jerry Garcia Birthday Band’s debut performance has been shared on the official Jerry Garcia YouTube channel.
Longtime Jerry Garcia Band keyboardist Melvin Seals and vocalists Jacklyn LaBranch and Gloria Jones were joined in the Jerry Garcia Birthday Band by Dead & Company bassist Oteil Burbridge, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead & Ghost Light guitarist Tom Hamilton, Widespread Panic drummer Duane Trucks and saxophonist Kamasi Washington. The Jerry Garcia Birthday Band focused on songs from the JGB repertoire including a gorgeous rendition of the biblical tale “Gomorrah.” Hamilton and Burbridge shared lead vocals duties on what was a standout moment from the Jerry Garcia Birthday Band’s set.
