Bassist Phil Lesh and guitarist Stu Allen continued a series of “Thunder & Lightning” concerts at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California on Tuesday night. The pair employs a rotating lineup for “Thunder & Lightning” with last night’s ensemble rounded out by guitarist Scott Metzger, drummer Jay Lane and multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby. A free webcast was provided by nugs.tv and the footage is still available for viewing below.

The five-piece opened with a cover of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” sung by Stu Allen. Next, Scott Metzger channeled Ron “Pigpen” McKernan on “Mr. Charlie.” Allen then shined both with his stunning solo and spot-on vocals for “Althea.” The concert rolled on with Phil Lesh handling lead vocals on “Peggy-O” ahead of a well-jammed “Alligator.” Lane propelled “Deal,” which found the ensemble vacillating between tempos towards the end before Metzger unleased a fiery solo as part of the “Let It Grow” set closer.

Allen, Lesh, Metzger, Crosby and Lane kicked off the second set with a “Here Comes Sunshine” that featured impressive interplay between the guitarists. The quintet dove deep out of the typical structure of the Grateful Dead classic before Allen led them back into the end of the tune. Next up were Metzger-fronted renditions of “Feel Like A Stranger” and “Throwing Stones.” The latter concluded with a weird jam that eventually gave way to “Dark Star.”

The ensemble worked through the first verse of “Dark Star” and then showed off their improvisational might in moving along to “Mountains In The Moon.” Phil sang “Mountains Of The Moon” as well as the “Bird Song” that followed. An exploratory jam out of “Bird Song” wound its way into the second verse of “Dark Star.” When Metzger, Allen and Lesh were finished singing “Dark Star,” the band made a quick move towards “Foolish Heart.” Stu did a fantastic job leading the Built To Last gem. The guitarist also shined on the “Playing In The Band” that ended the second set. For the encore, the five-piece brought the night to a close with a slow and throbbing “Standing On The Moon.”
