Prince‘s previously unheard “Do Me, Baby” demo recorded in 1979 has been shared today by The Prince Estate and Warner Records to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the late musician’s Controversy album coming out on this date in 1981. “Do Me, Baby (Demo)” is also available for pre-order on limited edition replica cassette and 7″ vinyl.

Prince initially cut “Do Me, Baby” in 1978 with friend and collaborator André Cymone before prepping a solo version and adding outtakes the following year as part of the sessions that yielded his self-titled 1979 studio album. The Purple One then revisited the ballad in 1981 and included the slow jam on Controversy.

A 2″ multitrack master tape featuring the 1979 take on “Do Me, Baby” was unearthed recently on cassette in Prince’s vault. Grammy-winning engineer Chris James mixed the track to match the original demo cassette specs with Bernie Grundman handling mastering duties.
