Pink Talking Fish & Jazz Is Phish Each Honor Prince With Covers
Two tribute acts were among the many bands that paid their respects to Prince on Thursday hours after his tragic death. Pink Talking Fish performed a couple of Prince songs at Nectar’s in Burlington, while played a Prince cover of their own at Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.
Phish/Talking Heads/Pink Floyd tribute act Pink Talking Fish fit a cover of Prince’s “1999” within their second set last night at the venue that helped birth Phish. The band later worked “1999” teases into “Weekapaug Groove” just as Phish did on December 31, 1998 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. PTF’s second set at Nectar’s came to a close with a version of “The Squirming Coil” that saw keyboardist Richard James segue into a solo piano/vocal rendition of “Purple Rain.” Listen to audio of both “1999” and “The Squirming Coil” > “Purple Rain”:
While Phish’s renditions of “Purple Rain” found drummer Jon Fishman on vocals and vacuum, tribute act Jazz Is Phish went a more conventional route in covering the Prince classic last night in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Watch the band’s horn-driven version of “Purple Rain” captured by Chris Cafiero:
