Pink Talking Fish looked to the Star Wars franchise for a Halloween concert in Denver dubbed “MAULOWEEN.” It was all about Darth Maul for the tribute act’s two-set show at So Many Roads Museum And Brewery on Monday night.
Each member of PTF was transformed into different Darth Maul variations. Bassist Eric Gould was “Barf Maul” of Spaceballs, while drummer Zack Burwick served as Wayne’s World’s “Garth Maul.” Additionally, keyboardist Steve Learson dressed as The Beatles’ “Maul McCartney” and emceed the night complete with a British accent. Guitarist Cal Kehoe appeared as Celtics player “Maul Pierce” for the first set and “Maul Of America” for the second set.
A Mini Maul was set up on stage and sound and video engineer Davis Thurston got in on the action as “Bald Maul.” A huge “Better Call Maul” banner created by Dina Good was draped behind the stage with Maul dressed as Better Call Saul character Saul Goodman.
Pink Talking Fish emerged while a recording of Maul’s theme “The Duel Of The Fates” was played over the PA. The Phish/Pink Floyd/Talking Heads tribute act opened with “Run Like Hell” and then had Maul McCartney introduce a take on The Beatles’ “Get Back.” Later in the first set, PTF changed the lyrics for “Another Brick In The Wall” to “Another Brick In The Maul.” The quartet went on to perform “The Duel Of The Fates” live before capping the frame with their mashup of Phish’s “Carini” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.”
Eric Gould and Cal Kehoe engaged in a lightsaber duel amid the “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” aka “2001,” that kicked off Monday’s second set. “2001” gave way to Talking Heads classic “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody).” Pink Talking Fish then worked Pink Floyd’s “Sheep” into a take on the Hot Chocolate 1975 smash “You Sexy Thing” sung as “You Sexy Maul.” The group fit “Duel Of The Fates” teases into the ensuing versions of “Maze” and “Crosseyed & Painless” ahead of a set-closing “Comfortably Numb.” A “Tweezer Reprise” featuring the end of “Hey Jude” was Pink Talking Fish’s encore in Denver on Halloween.
