Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Goose kicked off an extensive tour last week. The first collaboration between the bird bands took place on Thursday at the Belly Up in Solana Beach, California, where Goose guitarist Rick Mitarotondra was among PPPP’s guests.

Goose opened the night with a set that featured originals “Doc Brown,” “Wysteria Lane,” “Arcadia” and “So Ready” along with covers of Wes Montgomery’s “Switchin'” and “Electric Avenue” by Eddy Grant. Then, Pigeons took the stage for their first of two sets by pairing “High As Five” with “Bad For You” and “Paperboy.” Mitarontondra joined in the fun for the “Posideon” that followed and went toe-to-toe with Jeremy Schon. Pigeons closed out the frame with the year’s first versions of “Snake Eyes” and “Time To Ride” as well as Presto single “King Kong.”

Thursday’s second PPPP set got underway with “Havana” and a “The Hop” that bled into “F.U.” Next, Charlottesville-based multi-instrumentalist Gina Sobel emerged to add flute to “J. Town.” Pigeons then played “Burning Up My Time” before fitting a cover of Steve Miller Band’s “Abracadabra” into their own “Drunk People.” The quartet capped the set with “Overrun” and “Avalanche” and ended the evening with a “Fun In Funk” encore. Both bird bands headed to Los Angeles for a two-night stand at The Troubadour over the weekend and continue the tour on Wednesday in San Luis Obispo.
