Multiple venues around Brooklyn once again hosted the 2016 Northside Festival last weekend. Brooklyn Bowl, Music Hall Of Williamsburg, Rough Trade, Knitting Factory and several other locations hosted performances from a diverse selection of musicians. McCarren Park also was the site of several performances which were captured by photographer Jeremy Gordon and can be viewed in his gallery below.
Among the McCarren Park performers was pioneering hip-hop artists Grandmaster Flash who began his set Friday by discussing the history of the genre he helped establish. Saturday’s set by The Felice Brothers was augmented by founding former member Simone Felice and Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst. The Felice Brothers returned the favor by providing backing support during Oberst’s set, which included Bright Eyes tracks “Four Winds,” “Train Under Water,” “At the Bottom of Everything” and “First Day Of My Life” as well as Felice Bros.’ “Rockefeller Druglaw Blues.” Oberst also welcomed fellow singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves for a take on her “Back On The Map.” Musgraves then took the stage for her set which featured a Oberst returning for a duet on a cover of Hank Williams’ “Hey Good Lookin.’”
Sunday’s action at McCarren Park included up-and-coming buzz band from Spain Hinds as well as the debut live performance by former Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij. Rostam’s set saw a reunion with his Discovery partner Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot, marking the first time the duo has performed tracks from their 2009 record LP. The former Vampire Weekend multi-instrumentalist was also joined by former Dirty Projectors member Deradoorian and The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser.
Legendary mastermind of The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson and his band featuring his old mate Al Jardine made their first appearance on U.S. soil since returning from a U.K. Tour. After opening with such Beach Boys classics as “California Girls,” “I Get Around” and “Surfer Girl,” the ensemble delivered the 50-year-old LP Pet Sounds in its entirety, followed by another set of surf-rock favorites.
