New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Day 6 :: 4.30.16 :: New Orleans, LA

The 2016 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival second weekend continued with an abbreviated day Saturday. Inclement weather forced the cancellation of many performances including headliners Stevie Wonder, Snoop Dogg, Beck, Buddy Guy and others. The rainy weather conditions have so far not affected Sunday’s slate of music and Jazz Fest organizers are allowing those with Saturday passes to attend toady.

Before the storm, Saturday got started with an appearance by Deacon John’s Jump Blues with other NOLA artists such as brass bands The Soul Rebels and the renowned Preservation Hall Jazz Band appearing throughout the day. Late Show house band Jon Batiste & Stay Human returned home for a Jazz Fest appearance and jazz-vocalist Gregory Porter was also on stage before the rains came. Local icon Dr. John was introduced by Wavy Gray but his set featuring Batiste and members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band was cut short and the stage soon cleared due to the rain and wind.

Stevie Wonder addressed the crowd gathered to see his canceled headlining set, saying he had planned to dedicate the performance to Prince and leading the crowd with a megaphone on an acappella version of “Purple Rain.” Later in the night, Wonder made a surprise appearance at Irvin Mayfield Playhouse, performing a set of music in the small club featuring Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews sitting-in and another rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain.” View photographer Adam McCullough’s photos from a soggy Saturday in the gallery below:
