New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Day 5 :: 4.29.16 :: New Orleans, LA

The second weekend of the 2016 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival continued on Friday with another full slate of performances across the fairgrounds’ several stages. Tough decisions abounded at the end of the day as Ms. Lauryn Hill closed out the Congo Square Stage, while My Morning Jacket closed the Gentilly Stage and Paul Simon headlined the action on the Acura Stage. MMJ’s rousing set saw them joined by members of Preservation Hall Jazz Band for a portion of their performance that included a two-song tribute to Prince in “Sign O The Times” and “Purple Rain.” Hill mixed material from her solo career with Fugees numbers, while Paul Simon’s set included new songs from Stranger To Stranger and plenty of his most beloved tunes including “The Boy In The Bubble,” “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover,” “Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes” and “Late In The Evening.”

Earlier in the day, hometown favorites The Revivalists showed off their rock-heavy mettle on “Criminal,” “Catching Fireflies” and many others. Bassist Tony Hall gathered a bevy of New Orleans veteran musicians for a tribute to James Brown, while other hometown acts such as Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Raw Oyster Cult represented the Crescent City well. On the Fais Do Do Stage, East L.A. rockers Los Lobos played a set featuring a full performance of their 1988 album La Pistola y El Corazón.
