New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Day 3 :: 4.24.16 :: New Orleans, LA

The third day of the 2016 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival saw headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers end their performance by welcoming hometown heroes Ivan Neville, Zigaboo Modeliste and George Porter Jr. to join them for a jam and “Give It Away.” Sunday’s first weekend finale at the Fairgrounds also featured bassist Reggie Scanlan sharing the stage with The New Orleans Suspects one more time before he departs the band due to health issues. Big Chief Monk Boudreaux kept busy by sharing the stage with both the Golden Eagle Mardi Gras Indians and as part of the Voice Of The Wetlands All-Stars set.

Another highlight came in the Jazz Tent, where legendary musicians Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter teamed up for what one report described as “nearly an hour and a half of avant-garde fusion jazz.” There were plenty of tributes to both Prince and David Bowie on Sunday including Nick Jonas covering The Purple One’s “Purple Rain” and Royal Teeth tackling “Under Pressure.” Jonas also welcomed Trombone Shorty for “Jealous.” The action resumes at the Fairgrounds on Thursday.
