Widespread Panic :: 2.5.16 :: Panic En La Playa :: Riviera Maya, Mexico ::

Friday night saw Widespread Panic deliver their fourth and final performance at this year’s edition of Panic En La Playa at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Coming on the eve of the 30 anniversary of the first official Widespread Panic concert at the Mad Hatter Ballroom in Athens, Georgia in 1986 – last evening’s performance was punctuated with a four song, 20+ minute encore. Opening with the instrumental “A of D,” Panic stuck to their older material for most of the first set, taking up such fan favorites as “Diner,” “Bowlegged Woman” and “Jack” along with more recent newcomer “Steven’s Cat.” The band utilized another instrumental opener, leading off the second half with “Machine” followed by “Barstools & Dreamers.” Rarely played covers “Quarter Tank Of Gasoline” and “Red Beans” highlighted a set dotted with originals like “Hatfield” and the set closing “Ain’t Life Grand.” The lengthy encore concluded with “Chilly Water” (one of two originals played three decades ago tonight) heading into “Action Man,” before wrapping up with the end of “Chilly Water.” Check out Joshua Timmerman’s photos from Day Four of Panic En La Playa ’16:
