The third and final day of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s first weekend was a soggy one. Record-breaking rainfall led organizers to delay opening the Fairgrounds until 3 p.m. While the schedule was condensed, there were still plenty of performances in store on Sunday including a headlining set from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Petty and his band played 19 songs in total and although they focused on the hits such as “Free Fallin’,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Yer So Bad” and “American Girl,” they did work in the first performance of “Swingin'” off Echo since 1999 and the tour debut of “Good Enough.”
New Orleans own Dr. John played his traditional set at the festival on Sunday backed by the Gris-Gris Krewe on the Acura Stage ahead of Petty’s performance. Vocalist Lorde’s set took place at the same time as Petty’s and she noted as much, reportedly telling the crowd it was killing her to miss the Heartbreaker’s performance. Midnite Disturbers, Maceo Parker, Elle King and Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes were among the other acts that helped close out the first weekend of Jazz Fest ’17.
