New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Day 1 :: 04.28.17 :: New Orleans, LA
The long running New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival kicked off the first of two consecutive weekends of music in the Big Easy. Native son Harry Connick Jr. made his first Jazz Fest appearance in 10 years and his performance included tributes to Prince, Allen Toussaint and George Michael. Friday’s action also featured the Trey Anastasio Band whose set mixed originals such as “First Tube” and “Sand” with covers including “Clint Eastwood” by Gorillaz and the recently debuted traditional tune “The Parting Glass.” Day one also saw bluegrass family act The Travelin’ McCourys, rising soul singer Leon Bridges, renowned NOLA vocalist Aaron Neville and hip-hop legend Nas with local brass ensemble The Soul Rebels also performing sets.
Friday also presented teenaged pianist Joey Alexander and his trio, as well as the eclectic sounds of The Pedrito Martinez Group, Meschiya Lake and The Little Big Horns, Kristin Diable & The City, Mokoomba of Zimbabwe, Trumpet Mafia, Soul Brass Band and many more.
