Guitarist Trey Anastasio has shared the live stage with Jo Lampert on numerous occasions, including with his band Phish. The frequent collaborators performed together again last night when Anastasio joined Lampert at Joe’s Pub for a cover of a Talking Heads classic.

Thursday’s Valentine’s Day inspired concert was billed as “Color Me Cupid – A Night for Lovers and Loners.” Lampert was backed by a band composed of bandleader/keyboardist Keith Cotton, bassist Julia Adamy, drummer Ross Pederson, guitarist Ben Butler and guitarist/keyboardist Matt Beck.

Near the end of the show, Lampert paused to introduce Anastasio, telling the audience:

“There is a special guest who’s gonna come up here, who I revere – many do – and he is both an idol and a friend. I consider him one of the best men that I know. The talent is unending. And he decided that he would, in fact, grace the stage with me tonight and I feel super duper honored.”

Anastasio emerged with one of his custom Paul Languedoc electric guitars and augmented a slickly arranged version of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody).” Anastasio took several soaring guitar solos while Lampert responded with improvised vocals.

After Anastasio’s guest spot, Lampert wrapped the “Color Me Cupid – A Night for Lovers and Loners” concert with a touching rendition of Phish’s song “Waste.”
