Last week Phish announced Big Boat, their 13th studio album and first since 2014’s Fuego. The quartet revealed the name of the LP, shared a video snippet, unveiled the cover art and announced Big Boat will be issued on October 7. Today, NPR Music has premiered the album’s first single, “Breath And Burning.”

“I wrote this song on the beach after our three-night run in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico last January,” guitarist and writer of “Breath And Burning” Trey Anastasio told NPR Music. “I loved watching the faces of all the people dancing and splashing in the ocean while we played. I kept thinking, ‘This will all end sooner or later, one way or another. So I’m gonna enjoy every last second of it while we’re still here. I’m not gonna wave away the dessert cart on the Titanic. I want to be like that string quintet that kept playing while it sank.”

The studio version of “Breath And Burning” features a horn section and an organ solo from Page McConnell. Phish debuted the live version of the song in Noblesville, Indiana on June 26. The quartet showed “Breath And Burning” could be a jam vehicle one show later with an extended version in Philadelphia on June 28. “Breath And Burning” has been performed four additional times with the most recent rendition delivered on the first night of the band’s recently concluded Dick’s Sporting Goods Park run in Denver.
