Phish Brings Back ‘Mike’s Song’ Second Jam

Thirty-six hours after Phish laid down a fantastic performance in Nashville that included the return of the second jam in “Mike’s Song” for the first time in over 15 years the community is still abuzz. Videographer LazyLightning55 has unveiled his footage of the epic, 15-minute “Mike’s” from Nashville.

If you missed our post on Phish in Nashville, the return of the second “Mike’s” jam came about after Phish fan/professional musician Drew Hitz played guitarist Trey Anastasio the last second “Mike’s” jam which took place in Columbus, Ohio on July 14, 2000 during a meeting with the guitarist.

Phish.net’s recap of Tuesday night’s show has much more about the backstage meeting between Hitz and Anastasio that led to the second “Mike’s” jam return as well as additional backstory. Nashville’s second “Mike’s” jam was unlike the ones the quartet played between 1993 and 2000 in that it started off out of a descending lick not unlike the one that normally ends the song. The jam also started in F-minor as compared to the “Simple”-like F-major key found in most second “Mike’s” jams. However the band did eventually transition into F-major.
