Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh paired up with The Terrapin Family Band for the second of two shows at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City on Monday night. Phil and his mates tore through classics from the Grateful Dead repertoire as well as songs from The Rolling Stones and Velvet Underground throughout two sets and a lengthy encore.
Phil, guitarists Grahame Lesh and Ross James, drummer Alex Koford and keyboardist Jason Crosby kicked off the first set with a “Sugar Magnolia” that took an excursion into “Scarlet Begonias” before the “Sunshine Daydream” ending. Phil then led a cover of Robbie Robertson’s “Broken Arrow.” A big surprise within the first set was a take on The Rolling Stones’ “Monkey Man” that gave way to “Fire On The Mountain” ahead of a “Throwing Stones” set closer.
Last night’s second set started with Ross James stepping into the spotlight on Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane.” Later in the set WOLF!/JRAD guitarist Scott Metzger emerged for “Viola Lee Blues.” Monday’s second set concluded with an inventive “Playing In The Band” > “Terrapin Station” > “I Know You Rider” > “Playing In The Band Reprise” sequence. There was still plenty left in the tank for a three-song encore of “Bird Song” > “The Other One” > “Samson & Delilah.”
