Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band Completes Birthday Run at The Capitol Theatre
By Jeffrey Greenblatt Mar 17, 2018 • 11:05 am PDT

A night after celebrating his 78th birthday with the help of The Terrapin Family Band and jazz guitarist John Scofield, Phil Lesh returned to The Capitol Theatre in the New York City suburb of Port Chester to close out the three-night stand. The bassist was once again accompanied by the same set of players for the finale on Friday night, which saw them mix material from the Grateful Dead repertoire alongside songs from a number of Lesh’s contemporaries.
The penultimate set of the run got going with a full-band take on “Uncle John’s Band.” Guitarist Ross James stepped up to the mic next to lead the band through a take on The Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane,” from their seminal 1970 album Loaded. Drummer Alex Koford took the helm on singing lead for “He’s Gone” as they looked to Bob Dylan’s catalog next for the longtime Jerry Garcia Band favorite “Tangled Up In Blue.” Grahame Lesh next fronted the six-piece band on The Rolling Stones’ “Tumbling Dice” from their 1972 classic Exile On Main Street. The politically-charged “Throwing Stones” and “Truckin'” brought the first frame to an end.
Phil Lesh & Co. kicked off their final set of the run with “Estimated Prophet.” The Terrapin Family Band original “Galilee” followed with James then fronting the band for a take on the traditional song “Samson And Delilah,” which first gained popularity via Rev. Gary Davis. Multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby got to show off his vocal stylings on “Bird Song” which saw the ensemble drop into “The Other One” before returning back to the tune that was written as an elegy to Janis Joplin. Psychedelic-era favorite “St. Stephen” followed with “Wharf Rat” and a spirited “Sugar Magnolia” closing things out. Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band with the help of John Scofield brought the run to end with “Touch Of Grey.”
