Phil Lesh Shows Off Tiger As Phil & Friends Honor 1987 Grateful Dead At Terrapin Crossroads

On Tuesday night bassist Phil Lesh continued a series of shows at his Terrapin Crossroads venue in San Rafael, California honoring each year of the Grateful Dead. Phil Lesh & Friends recreated a Dead performance from 1987, while Phil showed off Jerry Garcia’s iconic Tiger guitar which San Francisco Giants pitcher Jake Peavy sent over to the venue.

1987 was one of the years Garcia used the Doug Irwin-created Tiger guitar the most. While Peavy wasn’t on hand at Terrapin last night as he prepares for an upcoming pitching performance, he sent his band mate Ben Jernigan and one of his reps to the venue with Tiger. Phil got reacquainted with the axe and showed it off to the crowd, but it wasn’t used on-stage. Lesh’s son Grahame also had a few moments with Tiger backstage:

Tiger was Jerry Garcia’s main instrument between 1979 and 1989. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay bought the guitar at auction in 2002 for nearly a million dollars and dispatched Tiger to San Francisco, where Peavy is using it for an upcoming private jam session which he hopes will feature members of the Grateful Dead.

Before Phil Lesh & Friends began their first of two sets on Tuesday, Jay Blakesberg moderated a chat with Phil in which Lesh showed off Tiger and talked about the huge role the guitar played in 1987. Here’s a photo posted by Buck on Ratdog.org:

Phil Lesh was joined by Grahame, Stu Allen, Alex Koford, Ezra Lipp and Scott Guberman to perform a show using the same setlist the Grateful Dead did on September 18, 1987. Allen handled vocals on Jerry songs, while Grahame fronted the band on Bobby tunes. The show Phil & Friends recreated is best remembered for the insane sequence of “Jam > Goin’ Down The Road Feelin’ Bad > All Along The Watchtower > Morning Dew > Good Lovin’> La Bamba > Good Lovin'” that followed “Drums.”
