Phil Lesh & Friends Cover “Free” By Phish In 2014
By Scott Bernstein Mar 9, 2016 • 11:40 am PST
Two years ago last night, Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh celebrated the second anniversary of his Terrapin Crossroads venue in San Rafael, California with a Phil Lesh & Friends performance. Lesh and his band worked a cover of Phish’s “Free” within the second of the evening’s two sets.
Phil’s band on March 8, 2014 found him joined by guitarists Jackie Greene and John Kadlecik as well as drummer Joe Russo and keyboardist Jason Crosby. The group began the second set with “Cryptical Envelopment” and the beginning of “Dark Star” before starting up the Phish cover. Kadlecik handled lead vocals on “Free.” The Phish cover then gave way to both “Drums” and “Space” segments ahead of a “Sunshine Of Your Love” jam and the conclusion of “Dark Star.” The set concluded with “Scarlet” > “Fire,” “Morning Dew” and “I Know You Rider.”
