Phil Lesh & Friends Pay Tribute To Grateful Dead 1980 At Terrapin Crossroads

By Scott Bernstein Aug 28, 2015 7:40 am PDT

Phil Lesh & Friends‘ series of shows honoring each year of Grateful Dead continued last night at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California; where the bassist and his band used the same setlist the Dead did on June 21, 1980 at West High Auditorium in Anchorage, Alaska.

Following a discussion about the year 1980 featuring Lesh led by Jay Blakesberg, Phil took the stage with guitarists Stu Allen and Grahame Lesh as well as keyboardist Rob Barraco and drummers Ezra Lipp and Alex Koford. During the discussion, Phil told the story of how the unfortunate cover of the Dead studio album Go To Heaven came together. Lesh called it “the lamest album cover we ever came up with.” Blakesberg related a story about the level of detail impresario Bill Graham put into the band’s 1980 run at the Warfield as well as the night Mickey Hart and Bob Weir got arrested after a show in San Diego for defending a Deadhead.

Allen sang the Jerry Garcia songs on Thursday, while Grahame Lesh handled lead vocals on Bob Weir tunes. Barraco showed off his Brent Mydland impression on “Far From Me” in the first set. Last night’s show ended with the one-two punch of “One More Saturday Night” and “Brokedown Palace” as the encore. This Sunday Phil Lesh & Friends honor 1981 in Grateful Dead history featuring the same band as the 1980 tribute with Rob Eaton swapping in for Grahame Lesh.
