By Scott Bernstein Jan 20, 2016 • 8:57 am PST
Way back in August Phil Lesh & Friends continued a series of performances at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California honoring each year of the Grateful Dead’s career with a show utilizing the setlist from a 1981 Dead concert. After more than four months the series finally moved forward at Terrapin yesterday with Phil & Friends paying tribute to 1982 Grateful Dead.
The Grateful Dead bassist was joined by a band featuring guitarists Stu Allen and Grahame Lesh, keyboardist Scott Guberman, and drummers Ezra Lipp and Alex Koford. Phil Lesh & Friends re-created the setlist the Dead used on at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco on February 17, 1982.
Allen handled Garcia vocals on such songs as “Sugaree,” “Bird Song” and “Loser,” while Grahame filled the Weir role by fronting the group on “New Minglewood Blues,” “Estimated Prophet,” “Sugar Magnolia” and more. As with past Grateful Dead tributes at the venue, Phil Lesh and Jay Blakesberg started the evening with a discussion about the year 1982. Phil was emotional as he discussed the best year of his life since 1982 was the year he met his wife, Jill Lesh, though he also talked about heavy times in the Grateful Dead world that year. Watch the fascinating discussion captured by Deadheadland including Deadheadland’s Brian Markovitz receiving a shout out and huge hug from Phil:
