Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh played the new Backyard outdoor space at his own Terrapin Crossroads venue in San Rafael, California on Saturday. Phil Lesh & Friends headlined the multi-band event with a pair of sets that saw Lesh joined by Chris Robinson, John Scofield, Scott Law, Tony Leone and Jason Crosby.
Sets from Alex Koford’s Colonel & The Mermaids ensemble as well as Lorin Rowan’s Rattlebox kicked off the festivites on Saturday afternoon. Phil Lesh & Friends opened their first set of the day with a cover of Hank Ballard’s “Let’s Go Let’s Go Let’s Go” ahead of a Chris-sung “Mr. Charlie.” The rest of the first Phil & Friends set featured Grateful Dead gems “Bertha,” “Brown-Eyed Women” and “Mason’s Children” along with renditions of “Jesse James” and Leiber/Stoller’s “I’m A Hog For You Baby.”
Chris Robinson handled lead vocals for the vast majority of both Phil & Friends sets. The second set began with a “Shakedown Street” > “Hard To Handle” pairing followed by a cover of Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say.” Phil and his band then trotted out Bob Dylan’s “She Belongs To Me” before “New Speedway Boogie.” Next up was a “St. Stephen” that saw Chris share vocals with Scott Law and Phil. The sextet eventually worked “St. Stephen” into “Franklin’s Tower” ahead of a “Turn On Your Lovelight” set closer. Phil Lesh & Friends said farewell with a “Minglewood Blues” encore. A similar lineup plays Terrapin’s Grate Room tonight.
