PBS shared video of the legendary Peter Rowan’s The Caverns Sessions set filmed at the world-class subterranean venue The Caverns in Peham, Tennessee. The acclaimed singer-songwriter performed as part of the program formerly known as Bluegrass Underground’s 12th season.
Produced by Todd Mayo and Todd Jarrell’s Todd Squared, LLC, the rebranded Bluegrass Underground is the second longest-running music series on national television behind legendary PBS live music program Austin City Limits.
“We invite viewers to peer into the darkness of The Caverns to witness the diversity of American music today in a new light, all while surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty,” Mayo said at the launch of The Cavern Sessions 2023 season.

Peter Rowan’s Caverns Session premiered on October 18 and saw the singer-songwriter beginning his set solo on guitar with “Dust Bowl Children.” Rowan then introduced his band including drummer Larry Atamanuik — who Peter played with in early ‘70s band Seatrain — bassist Mike Bub and fiddler Julian Pinelli.
Rowan and company also delivered the title track from his 1982 album, The Walls Of Time, a song he co-wrote with the Father of Bluegrass and former bandmate Bill Monroe. Next, Peter offered Tex-Mex tune “Joker Moon.” Rowan closed his Caverns Session with his bluegrass standard and Old & In The Way favorite “Midnight Moonlight.”
