On January 31, 1976, Pete Townshend of The Who went solo acoustic for a rendition of “Drowned” in Meherabad, India. The Who shared footage featuring Townshend’s performance of “Drowned” on the band’s YouTube channel.
Pete Townshend originally wrote “Drowned” for inclusion on The Who’s 1973 double album, Quadrophenia, which was the band’s second rock opera. Townshend was in the midst of a pilgrimage to India with Delia De Leon in 1976, when he played “Drowned” for fellow devotees of Meher Baba. Audio of the performance was included on the 2018 Who Came First reissue.
