Perpetual Groove Welcomes Red Johnson For Paul Simon Cover In Denver

By Scott Bernstein Nov 13, 2017 2:38 pm PST

Veteran jam act Perpetual Groove concluded a run through Colorado with a Saturday night performance at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver. The band was joined by a pair of special guests including a member of Spafford.

PGroove began the action with a career-spanning string of “Gorilla Monsoon” > “Only Always” > “Man With All The Answers.” The quartet then continued the opening frame with “53 More Things To Do In Zero Gravity” and “Mayday” before bringing out keyboardist James Charles Dunstan (Spontaneous Underground) to help out on a cover of Butthole Surfers’ “Pepper.”

The foursome went with relatively new original “Black String” to open the second set ahead of “Playground.” Perpetual Groove then welcomed Spafford keyboardist Red Johnson, who had just finished a show of his own, to augment the core lineup on a rendition of Paul Simon’s “Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes.” The band closed out the set guest-less with classics “Two Shores,” “Space Paranoids,” “Cairo” and “Walkin’ In Place.” PGrove ended the night with an encore of “Paper Dolls” from their recent EP and the group’s beloved cover of “All Night Long” by Lionel Richie.”
