Pearl Jam Welcomes Dennis Rodman & Delivers Four 2016 Debuts At Wrigley Field

Seattle rockers Pearl Jam played what is likely their last concert of 2016 on Monday night at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Eddie Vedder & Co. made their finale count by working four 2016 debuts into a marathon performance that also saw the frontman have an unruly fan kicked out of the show and Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman make a cameo.

The first surprise of the night came early on when Pearl Jam played “Better Man” in the four-slot instead of its usual place within the encore. A few songs later Vedder dedicated “Given To Fly” to Chicago Cubs manager Joe Madden “and his team of heroes.” The Cubs weren’t the only local team Eddie showed love for as Pearl Jam busted out “Black, Red & Yellow” for the first time since 2014 in honor of the Bulls. Rodman came out towards the end of the song and provided the spoken word phone call section. At one point Vedder jumped into Dennis’s arms making for a wild scene.

Seventeen songs into the set Vedder stopped the band in the middle of “Lukin” when he spotted a male fan acting aggressively towards a female fan. Eddie had the aggressive fan kicked out before finishing “Lukin.” Pearl Jam started the first of two lengthy encores with the year’s first cover of Hunters & Collectors’ “Throw Your Arms Around Me.” Another 2016 debut followed, when the frontman dedicated “Man Of The Hour” to Layne Stanley who would have turned 49 on Monday. The first encore also included the 2016 debut of “Don’t Gimme No Lip” sung by Stone Gossard.

Monday’s seven-song second encore started with a cover of Victoria Williams’ “Crazy Mary” and also included covers of “Surrender” by Cheap Trick, “Rockin’ In The Free World” by Neil Young complete with a portion of “Time Has Come Today” as an intro and The Beatles’ “I’ve Got A Feeling.” Pearl Jam also worked in “Alive,” “All The Way” and “Yellow Ledbetter” among the second encore. As for now there are no Pearl Jam concerts on the books.
