Pearl Jam Dusts Off Clash Cover As Part Of Return To Missoula

Hot on the heels of two “Home Shows” in which they raised over $11 million for charity in Seattle, Pearl Jam continued their brief U.S. Tour at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula, Montana on Monday. Last night’s sold-out concert was the group’s first at the venue since 1998 and a home state show for bassist Jeff Ament.
Pearl Jam treated fans to a 29-song performance split into one main set and a lone encore that was nearly as long. Eddie Vedder & Co. opened with “Pendulum” from their most recent album, Lightning Bolt and then delivered a run of classics “Low Light,” “Go” and “Do The Evolution.” The group’s first cover of the night was “Arms Aloft” by Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros, a tune they hadn’t performed since 2016. Vedder followed “Mind Your Manners” by shouting out Ament and sharing his wine with the bassist. Quick Beatles and Rolling Stones teases then led into “Corduroy.”
Later in the night, Vedder praised drummer Matt Cameron and celebrated the anniversary of Cameron joining the band. The set rolled on with a career-spanning mix of material that included such favorites as “Daughter,” “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” and “Porch.” Last night’s encore featured a total of 11 songs. Up first were rarities “Bee Girl” and “Fatal” which was followed a cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” that saw Eddie reference Montana by changing a lyric to “no hell below us, above us Big Sky.” Next came “Given To Fly” and the recently busted-out Neil Young song “Throw Your Hatred Down.”

Pearl Jam continued the encore with a version of “Better Man” that contained brief tags of U2’s “With Or Without You” and “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” by the Ramones. A version of “Jeremy” was followed by the group’s first cover of The Clash’s “Know Your Rights” since September 30, 2012. The band proceeded to end the night with a run of “Alive,” “Rockin’ In The Free World” and “Indifference.” Next up for Pearl Jam are a pair of shows at Wrigley Field in Chicago on August 18 and 20.
