Pearl Jam Debuts Aerosmith Cover & Brings Out Former Red Sox At Fenway Park Debut

Seattle rockers Pearl Jam thrilled a capacity crowd at Boston’s Fenway Park on Friday night with a show featuring a distinctly Beantown flavor. Not only did Pearl Jam share the stage with a pair of former Red Sox, they debuted a cover by Boston’s own Aerosmith and busted out a different cover with a request passed on to the band by Boston sportswriter Peter Gammons.

Pearl Jam began their first-ever Fenway show with a heartfelt “Release.” The band went on to mix material from throughout their career over the course of three-hour, 32-song performance that ended with a cover of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley.” Towards the middle of the show. Pearl Jam welcomed former Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo to play guitar and sing on “Black.” Arroyo wasn’t the only member of the 2004 World Championship team to appear as later in the night Eddie Vedder asked if there was a “uke” in the house which led to Kevin Youkillis (aka “Youk”) making a brief appearance.

Friday’s show featured a pair of huge bust outs and a cover debut. Towards the end of the main set Pearl Jam dusted off Bob Dylan’s “Masters Of War” for the first time since July 1, 2008 – a span of 199 shows. The band opened their second encore with a debut cover of “Draw The Line,” the title track from Boston natives Aerosmith’s 1977 studio album. Yet the biggest surprise might be the evening’s penultimate song as Vedder & Co. busted out “I’ve Got A Feeling” by The Beatles for the first time since September 29, 2004 – a span of 357 shows. The Beatles cover came in response to a request by Matthew Plummer for his late father passed on to the band by famed sportswriter/commentator Peter Gammons, who was brought out for a quick bow.

Pearl Jam returns to Fenway Park on Sunday night.
