Pearl Jam Continues Bust Out Trend In Jacksonville

Seattle rock band Pearl Jam made their latest stop on their tour-opening run through Florida with a performance at Jacksonville Veterans Arena in Jacksonville. Keeping with a trend seen throughout the nascent tour, Pearl Jam continued to offer tour debuts and busted out a song that had been shelved for nearly six years.

“Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” served as the opener of the main set Wednesday night at the band’s first-ever performance in Jacksonville. “Mind Your Manners” came next, ahead of a pair of tour debuts: “Hail Hail” and “Last Exit” – the latter of which was played just once in 2015. A couple of songs later, the rarely played “Army Reserve” – a fitting choice given the name of the venue – was dusted off for just its third rendition since 2010 and first since 2014. A take on “Given To Fly” preceded the biggest bust out of the night in the form of the Binaural track “Rival,” which was last played May 17, 2010 at Pearl Jam’s show in Boston.

Other tour firsts included rarities “Setting Forth,” “Let The Records Play,” “Glorified G” and just the ninth performance of “Of The Earth.” The main set ended with “Porch” and frontman Eddie Vedder returned alone with his electric guitar to start the first encore with a cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down“ and Little Steven’s “I Am A Patriot.” The full band helped finish the first encore, including just the fifth live rendition of “Ghost” since 2009, The second encore kicked off with the first “Smile” since 2014 and continued with such favorites as “Once,” “Black,” “Alive” and Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.” Closing out the night, the first “Yellow Ledbetter” of the year concluded with a ripping “Star-Spangled Banner” executed by guitarist Mike McCready coda.
