Paul Simon Dusts Off ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ In Michigan

While famed singer-songwriter Paul Simon hasn’t varied the setlists for his current Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour much, he did have a special surprise in store for fans at his most recent show. Simon offered the tour debut of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan on Sunday night.

“Even though I wrote it, it has a strange deterrent for me — that’s not much of an introduction is it?,” Simon said before launching into the Simon & Garfunkel hit as per Billboard’s Gary Graff. The 76-year-old performer brought chamber ensemble yMusic on the road with him for the tour to contribute to portions of each show. Sunday’s version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” saw Paul backed by both his band and yMusic.

It remains to be seen whether “Bridge Over Troubled Water” makes future setlists, as Paul Simon performed the title track from the final Simon & Garfunkel album only once during his 2017 U.S. Tour. Graff did note the crowd responded enthusiastically to the tour debut leading Simon to exclaim, “maybe I’ll sing it again sometime.” The tour continues on Tuesday night in Toronto.
