Paul Simon & Bob Weir Duet At Outside Lands

By Scott Bernstein Aug 12, 2019 6:49 am PDT

Paul Simon closed out the 2019 Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco on Sunday with help from Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir. The pair’s “first duet” came on the Simon & Garfunkel gem “The Boxer” towards the end of Simon’s 21-song performance in Golden Gate Park.

Simon’s visit to the Bay, which included a “very special Outside Lands pop-up show” at the Fox Theater in Oakland on Friday, were his first full concerts since bringing his Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour to a close on September 22, 2018 in New York City. Paul utilized the same setlist at the Fox as he did at the festival itself with one exception: he led his band through “America” in Oakland and it didn’t make the cut in Golden Gate Park.

Paul Simon and his band were joined by yMusic for “Rene & Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War,” “Can’t Run But” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” at Outside Lands in a reprise of a pairing featured at each night of last year’s Farewell Tour. Simon brought out Weir after opening his encore with “Graceland” and “Still Crazy After All These Years.” Paul explained that he met Weir during a trip to California in 1967 for the Monterey Pop Festival and that they have been friends ever since. He went on to remark that this would be their first duet before the pair fronted Simon’s band on a gorgeous and a little loose rendition of “The Boxer.” Simon closed out his performance and the festival with solo renditions of “American Tune” and “The Sound Of Silence.”
