The Beatles and Grateful Dead worlds collided at Fenway Park in Boston on this date in 2016, when Paul McCartney shared the stage with Bob Weir. Bobby emerged during Macca’s encore for “Hi, Hi, Hi” and stuck around for a version of “Helter Skelter” that also featured a guest appearance from former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.
McCartney brought his One On One Tour to Fenway on July 17, 2016 just one day after Weir and Dead & Company finished a two-night stand at the home of the Red Sox. Paul led his band through a 32-song main set in Boston and then opened his encore with “Yesterday.” The former Beatle then introduced Weir as a musician he’s “never played with before but always wanted to.”

“How many of y’all were here last night,” Bob Weir said before adding to McCartney’s 1972 single “Hi, Hi, Hi.” Macca then quipped, “What was that? The Grateful Beatles or the Beatles Dead?” Next, Paul told the crowd he had one more surprise in store and explained the guest “doesn’t normally get on stage and sing and stuff but he can move.” Gronkowski came out and danced around and McCartney, his band and Weir ran through “Helter Skelter” from The White Album.
