Singer-songwriter Paul Cauthen abruptly canceled his Black On Black Tour last month and the the decision may have saved his life. After flying home, Cauthen went to the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, where he was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma, a form of thyroid cancer.
Paul Cauthen shared the news of his diagnosis in an update posted on social media. The outlaw country musician has a positive outlook on the situation and proclaimed, “I will tour again, I will sing on stage again. I’m not done by any means. I’ll have new music. I’ll keep and writing and keep on doing what I know that I need to do.”

The Lone Star State native’s tour was called off on February 6. “Starting today Paul is leaving the road and going back to Texas to take care of his mental and physical health,” began a statement shared that day by his team on social media. “We all love Paul very much and we are very happy and relieved that he has made this decision to put himself first. It is obviously necessary to cancel all of his shows for the foreseeable future and each venue will be able to provide information on cancellations and refunds. Join us in lifting up Paul and anyone near you that may be suffering.”
Paul Cauthen revealed what led to him stepping off the road within his new video message to fans. “I had pneumonia on the road and I was taking a bunch of steroids to get me through those shows. Something woke me up and I was blue in my lips and white in my face and just scared the hell out of me. Went up in front of my bus and talked to my bus driver, Tony, and I was like, ‘Where are we?’ Looked out the front of the bus window and it said Des Moines International Airport next exit. I flew home. I kind of shook myself, you know, and listened to myself for the first time in a long time,” Cauthen explained.
After he took a few weeks to get healthy, he went to the Cooper Clinic to undergo a series of scans. While most were clear, doctors found what they called a “hot spot” within his thyroid. The mass was determined to be papillary carcinoma.
“Looking back at it all, slowing down and taking some time to get healthy and getting off the road actually probably ended up saved my life,” Cauthen added. “I’ve had a lot to reflect and realized life is short and precious. Just know that I thank you so much for your unwavering support through it all.” He then made his vow to return and said god had him go up to the Cooper Clinic for a reason.
