Patti Smith was the musical guest on last night’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Drummer Questlove of the show’s house band The Roots was enlisted to help back the acclaimed singer-songwriter on a performance of one of Smith’s classic songs.
Questlove and bassist Tony Shanahan, along with Smith’s daughter Jesse on keyboards and son Jackson on guitar, backed Smith on her anthem “People Have The Power.” The song was written by Smith and her late husband Fred “Sonic” Smith and first recorded for her 1988 album Dream Of Life. Patti will hold a special concert in honor of Fred tomorrow evening at New York City’s Central Park SummerStage.
