Opening Night | Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers World Tour
By Scott Bernstein Aug 5, 2014 • 7:40 am PDT

Petty and his band opened the show with a cover of The Byrds’ “So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star,” a song they brought back last year for the first time since 1997. “Tweeter & The Monkey Man” from Tom’s time in The Traveling Wilburys, a cover of Little Feat’s “Willin’,” and Heartbreaker rarities “Spike,” “Rebels” and “To Find A Friend” also made the setlist of the tour opener. The Heartbreakers played “American Dream Plan B,” “U Get Me High,” “Forgotten Man” and “Shadow People” off Hypnotic Eye in San Diego. There were also plenty of Petty’s most-beloved songs scattered throughout the performance including “I Won’t Back Down,” “Learning To Fly,” “Refugee,” “You Wreck Me” and “American Girl.”
Surprisingly, support act Steve Winwood did not sit in with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on Sunday night. We’ll see if that changes as the tour progresses.
Here’s a look at both acts setlists from San Diego:
