New Orleans-based funk/soul outfit Naughty Professor are gearing up for a big 2017 in which they will release a new LP, Identity, and are expected to tour heavily behind it. Today, we have a taste of Identity as Naughty Professor has released the official video for “Stray,” a track featuring vocals from The Revivalists’ frontman David Shaw.
“When [drummer] Sam [Shahin] came to the band with the original musical idea for ‘Stray,’ within the first few run-throughs, and after some reflection, we all agreed that Dave’s voice was the perfect one to really bring this song to life,” said Naughty Professors’ John Culbreth (trumpet) of the collaboration. “Now that it’s been recorded and produced, I must say, I think we were right.”
While Naughty Professor’s first three albums saw the band establishing their knack of self-contained instrumentals, the band took a different approach for Identity. The new LP features more than a dozen collaborators including Shaw, Eric “Benny” Bloom, Chali 2na, Ivan Neville, Mike Dillon and members of The Soul Rebels. Each of the guests lent their vocal, instrumental and compositional contributions as Naughty Professor aimed to expand their musical into exciting new terrain.
