Each week Release Day Picks profiles new LPs and EPs Team JamBase will be checking out on release day Friday. This week we highlight new albums by Trigger Hippy, Kim Gordon, Big Thief and Allah-Las. Read on for more insight into the records we have all queued up to spin.

Trigger Hippy – Full Circle & Then Some

The Scoop: Music collective Trigger Hippy is back with their first album in five years, Full Circle & Then Some, and a revamped lineup. After the departure of Joan Osborne and Jackie Greene — who returned to their solo careers — Trigger Hippy co-founder and former Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman, along with bassist and vocalist Nick Govrik, retooled the outfit. The new lineup features Band Of Heathens multi-instrumentalist Ed Jurdi as well as saxophonist and vocalist Amber Woodhouse. The band mixes it up on the new album with shades of Memphis soul, New Orleans boogie, rock, blues, gospel and R&B. Full Circle & Then Some also features legendary harmonica player Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson) as well as guitar and mandolin ace Guthrie Trapp.

Kim Gordon – No Home Record

The Scoop: Multi-disciplinary artist and Sonic Youth co-founder Kim Gordon released her first-ever solo album today, No Home Record. For her solo debut, Gordon enlisted the help of Justin Raisen on production duties. Raisen has worked with Charli XCX, Ariel Pink and Sky Ferreira in the past. No Home Record also features contributions from Shawn Everett who has worked previously with the likes of Jim James, Mike Gordon, Brittany Howard and The War On Drugs. Composer and filmmaker Jake Meginsky also lent his talents to the record. The LP includes Gordon’s 2016 track “Murdered Out” as well as the single “Sketch Artist,” the video for which features a cameo from Abbi Jacobson of Broad City fame.

Big Thief – Two Hands

The Scoop: Just five months ago Brooklyn’s Big Thief released their third album, U.F.O.F.. Today, the band is back with their second LP of the year and what they call U.F.O.F.’s sister album, Two Hands. The 10-track 4AD release was recorded at Sonic Ranch, 30 miles west of El Paso just days after the quartet completed work on U.F.O.F. in Washington State. Big Thief went with a completely different approach for the new album. This time around the band members positioned their instruments in as tight a quarters as possible and recorded the material live with few overdubs. “Two Hands has the songs that I’m the most proud of; I can imagine myself singing them when I’m old,” said Big Thief vocalist Adrianne Lenker. “Musically and lyrically, you can’t break it down much further than this. It’s already bare-bones.” Big Thief tapped Andrew Sarlo to produce and Dom Monks to engineer Two Hands just as they did for U.F.O.F..

Allah Las – LAHS

The Scoop: Allah Las turned to Woods/Purple Mountains‘ Jarvis Taveniere to co-prouce with the band their fourth studio album, LAHS. Guitarists Miles Michaud and Pedrum Siadatian, bassist Spencer Dunham and drummer Matt Correia recorded the 13-track follow-up to their 2016 LP Calico Review at their own studio in Los Angeles. “We’ve been traveling a lot the past couple years and I think that played a role in influencing the broader variety of songs on this record,” Correia stated. “LAHS to me feels like a soundtrack to the past five years or so. A sort of audio postcard to anyone who wants to listen.”
