Multi-instrumentalist Matt Sweeney’s ongoing video series for Noisey, Guitar Moves, taped an interview with legendary Motörhead bassist Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister on August 15 of last year. The just-shared footage turned out to be one of the final interviews Lemmy gave before his death four months later on December 28, 2015, just days after turning 70.
Recorded in Los Angeles at Lemmy’s regular hangout, the Rainbow Bar & Grill, Sweeney and Lemmy don four-string Rickenbackers for a discussion of bass playing. Lemmy talks about seeing a pre-Beatlemania concert by The Beatles, his lap steel guitarist mother, how age affected his playing and much more while also interspersing demonstrations of his signature technique.
Sweeney – whose credits include recording with Johnny Cash, Cat Power, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Neil Diamond, Run The Jewels and others – is clearly honored and excited to be spending time with the iconic rocker. Watch the interview here:
