The weekend started with the sad news that legendary soul singer Bobby Womack passed away on Friday. Two of the many musicians who were influenced by Womack are Nigel Hall and Jon Cleary, who have unveiled a tribute to Bobby.

Bobby Womack wrote “Woman’s Gotta Have It” with Darryl Carter and Linda Womack for inclusion on his 1972 LP Understanding. The song hit #1 on the R&B charts shortly after its release. Hall manned electric piano, organ, drums, bass, flutes, percussion and vocals for a version of “Woman’s Gotta Have It” he just recorded with Jon Cleary, who plays acoustic piano and guitar as well as sings on the track. “Jon Cleary and I were in the studio and thought it was fitting to do a song in memory and tribute to one of the greatest singers and inspirations to us. We figured, ‘what the hell… lets have some fun’ This is an original idea that we decided to mash up and turn into this Bobby classic. Check out the Vamp at the end. In case you thought that we forgot the original, there it is… This is done in memory of one of the greatest soul influences of our time… Mr. Bobby Womack… REST IN POWER!!!” Hall shared about the just-released tribute.
