Today marks not only the start of the second weekend of this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival but also “Meters Day” in the Crescent City. NOLA Mayor Mitch Landrieu took to Twitter to declare a day in honor of the funk legends:

As we reported, The Meters have been selected by the United States Postal Service to be featured on the 27th annual Jazz Fest Postal Cachet commemorative mailing envelope. The original band of keyboardist Art Neville, guitarist Leo Nocentelli, drummer Zigaboo Modeliste and bassist George Porter Jr. performed at a ceremony in which The Meters envelope was displayed. The Meters will perform on Jazz Fest’s Acura Stage this Sunday.
