Jazz Fest After Dark :: 04.29 – 05.067.18
Various Venues :: New Orleans, LA

Over the past two decades, the musical offerings in the Crescent City during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival have expanded well beyond the Fairgrounds to dozens of New Orleans venues both on the nights of the event as well as the evenings of days between weekends. Photographer Adam McCullough was on hand in New Orleans and has shared a gallery documenting the many wonderful live musical experiences he caught. First up in the collection are images from the Foundation Of Funk concert at Howlin’ Wolf on April 29 featuring George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste joined by the Bonerama Horns, JoJo Hermann and Anders Osborne. Both Brandon “Taz” Niederauer and David Torkanowsky sat-in at various points of the show. On April 30, Adam watched as ALO/Jack Johnson keyboardist Zach Gill performed ALO’s “Maria,” Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and more at a pop-up exhibit held for photographer Michael Weintrob’s InstrumentHead book and series.

As a bonus, a few photos from the GiveNOLA Day Fest on May 1 featuring Irma Thomas and The Soul Rebels are included. Later that night, McCullough captured the Adam Deitch Quartet and FestMob (Steven Bernstein, Kirk Joseph, Jonathan Freilich, Will Bernard and Mike Dillon) at the Blue Nile. FestMob focused on improvised jazz and funk including a second line parade through the venue and onto the Balcony. Next, on May 2, Adam shot Ivan Neville presenting material from throughout his career for his Piano Sessions series at Blue Nile, where the Dumpstaphunk frontman was joined by Cris Jacobs on guitar. The photographer also documented “Game Of Bones” featuring “Big Sam” Williams and Corey Henry at Blue Nile on the 2nd.

On May 3 and 4, McCullough was on hand at Preservation Hall for the “Midnight Preserves” series. Hot off their tour with Arcade Fire, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band performed on both nights with Irma Thomas and Joe Lastie, among others sitting-in on the 4th. Thursday evening also saw Cha Wa show off their brass band meets Mardi Gras Indian sounds. Karl Denson, Robert Walter and Walter “Wolfman” Washington were among guest performers on May 5. Also on the 5th, Big Sam’s Funky Nation held court at Blue Nile to celebrate the release of their Songs In The Key Of Funk LP. Finally, Adam’s gallery ends with photos from May 6 featuring Mia Borders at Blue Nile Balcony Room and Funky Butt Better (Doug Wimbish, Roosevelt Collier, Big Sam, Maurice Brown, Marcus Machado & more) at Blue Nile as well as a bonus snap of Haitian band Lakou Mizik performing at the Bywater Bakery on May 7.
