Singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, who tragically drowned in 1997, sure knew how to add his own spin to the covers he recorded and performed. Buckley’s rendition of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen can be found on many lists of the “best covers ever” and may be more familiar to many of our readers than the original. On March 16 Columbia/Legacy will release You And I, a collection of 10 previously- unreleased Jeff Buckley recordings that includes eight covers and two originals.

Our first taste of the LP is Buckley’s rendition of “Everyday People” by Sly & The Family Stone. Listen:

Other covers included on You & I are Bob Dylan’s “Just Like A Woman,” the traditional tunes “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Cryin'” and “Poor Boy Long Way From Home,” Led Zeppelin’s “Night Flight,” “Calling You” by Bob Telson and The Smiths’ “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side” and “I Know It’s Over.” The collection also contains originals “Grace” and “Dream Of You And I.”

Buckley recorded most of the tracks found on the LP in 1993 and they are thought to be the first tracks laid down by Jeff for his label Columbia Records. NPR broke the news of You And I and premiered the clip of “Everyday People” above.
