On May 27, the Zappa Family Trust will release the third installment of Frank Zappa Road Tapes, a live archival series that was started in 2012. Road Tapes, Venue #3 features Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention’s two July 5, 1970 shows at the Tyrone Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.
The next Road Tapes will come as part of a round of vault offerings from the Zappa estate that will also include reissues of the first two Road Tapes installments as well as a triple-disc Lumpy Money Project/Object set. The lineup of the Mothers from July 1970 saw Frank Zappa joined by Howard Kaylan (vocals), Mark Volman (vocals), George Duke (keyboards, trombone), Ian Underwood (keyboards, alto sax), Jeff Simmons (bass, vocals) and Aynsley Dunbar (drums).
Road Tapes, Venue #1 was recorded at Kerrisdale Arena in Vancouver on August 25, 1968 and was originally released on October 31, 2012. Road Tapes, Venue #2 was recorded August 23 – 24, 1973 at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Finland and was originally released on October 31, 2013.
