Hear Neil Young’s Previously Unreleased Duet With Nicolette Larson

Neil Young shared another preview of his Neil Young Archives Vol. III (1976-1987) box set ahead of its release on September 6. Young issued a previously unreleased recording of “Lady Wingshot” featuring late vocalist Nicolette Larson.

Premiered by AARP, “Lady Wingshot” was recorded by Young on guitar and harmonica and the group he named The Gone With The Wind Orchestra. Along with Larson’s vocals, the session held at Nashville Musicians Union Hall included Ben Keith on pedal steel guitar, Spooner Oldham on piano, Tim Drummond on bass, Karl T. Himmel on drums and Rufus Thibodeaux on fiddle.

Young and Larson collaborated several times in the late-1970s, including on Young’s 1978 album Comes A Time. “Lady Wingshot” was recorded during sessions for that album. Larson, who died in 1977 at age 45, scored a hit in 1978 with her version of “Lotta Love,” which was written by Young and appeared on Comes A Time.

According to the Sugar Mountain setlist database, Neil Young first performed “Lady Wingshot” on his 32 birthday when it was played at the 1977 Miami Music Festival. Young was backed by The Gone With The Wind Orchestra for the festival set in Florida.

“Lady Wingshot” was performed by Young again in 1989 on a tour with a band he dubbed The Restless. The two instances are the only times the song has been played by Young.

Consisting of 17 CDs and 5 Blu-Ray discs, the deluxe edition of Archives Vol. III presents 198 total music tracks — live, studio, mixes and edits — 121 of those previously unreleased. Additionally, the Archives Vol. III deluxe edition Blu-Rays contains 11 films, four of those previously unreleased. The Blu-Rays also boast 128 tracks and a total of 14 hours of film.

A separate 17 CD limited edition box will also be available via retailers. Further, Young is offering a double vinyl LP-only set titled Takes, a 16-track collection including one track from 16 of the 17 CDs in the Archives Vol. III box set. Takes contains three unreleased songs and 12 previously unreleased tracks.
