Neighbor Debuts ZZ Top & The Beatles Covers At Soundcheck Studios Residency

Neighbor continued their five-week Tuesday residency at Soundcheck Studios in Pembroke, Massachusetts celebrating the quartet’s fifth anniversary. The Boston-based band unveiled covers from The Beatles and ZZ Top during their second Soundcheck showing.

Neighbor kicked things off with a three-song sequence of “You Could Be Mine,” “Yo-Yo Ma” and “Carmelita,” with the latter containing a “Free Bird” tease from guitarist Lyle Brewer.

“Rosalia” came next before the group took a more apt ZZ Top instrumentation with keyboardist Richard James slinging on the bass and bassist Dan Kelly on a second guitar alongside Lyle. Drummer Dean Johnston held down Top’s rocker, “Tush,” first time played by Neighbor.

Brewer would call back to “Tush” on an exploratory “One For The Hoop” and also threw in a Phish “Talk” tease. “Mary And Martha,” “Mighty Apple Tree” and “The Bottom Of My Heart” rounded out the first frame.

Set two launched with “I Saw You” which led into the debut of The Beatles’ early rocker, “I Saw Her Standing There,” off the legendary band’s debut 1963 album, Please Please Me. Lyle added elements of Neighbor’s “Into The Sun” during the Fab Four premiere.

The second set also saw an expansive “Terror For Free” with Brewer toying with Dr. Dre’s “Xxplosive” and returning once again to “Tush” on “Old Dog.” The second frame wrapped with “Take Me Alive.” For the encore, Brewer went solo for the rarity, “If By Sea,” to cap the concert.
